On Wednesday 11 November, DUDU MANHENGA launches her third exciting recording ‘TOWARDS ALIGNMENT’ at The Mannenberg in Fife Avenue.  Another colourful afro jazz adventure, the latest offering is a double CD of a top-quality live recording of some of Zimbabwe’s best of that genre, made in Zimbabwe.

Towards Alignment was recorded from ‘Solo Encounters with Dudu Manhenga’ over four days at the beautiful REPS theatre stage in March 2009, a daring move by the young diva to get closer to her audience in a setting where the finer nuances of her music could be more fully appreciated.  “I feel more alive on stage than in the studio, and the studio does not allow for that spark of spontaneity - an occasional joke, or sharing of my life experiences - like I am able to do during live performances” she said.

The hidden challenge of a live recording, of course, is that there is no room for error, and the first recording has to be the best recording; it cannot be repeated in the live setting.  As evidenced on the CD, the live performances revealed Dudu reaching a new level of delivery, a new high in quality, the achievement of a production of international standard - something of which Zimbabwe can be proud.

After ‘Out of the Blu’ in 2003 and ‘Jula’ in 2007, the 2009 album charts the artists development and growth, and a huge step forward.  It features new compositions Udwendwe, Inspired by Nature, Aye Dudu, Amalobolo and Ngiyesaba, along with some songs from the first two albums now recorded live for the first time.

The music is a dynamic fusion of genres: afro, contemporary, Zimbabwe traditional, township, jazz, Latino, and a cultural cross-breed of Zimbabwe's Manica, Mashona and Matabele rhythms and melodies, with sizzling vocals.

Artistic support is everything, and is brilliantly delivered by backing band Color Blu, comprising Blessing Muparutsa (drums), Nick Nare (keys) and Enoch Piroro (bass), and for this recording features guests James Buzuzi (guitar), John Mambira (percussion), and backing vocalists Zanele Manhenga, Tino Bimha, David Machaka and Victor Muparutsa.

With the live spark and such an array of gifted musicians, Towards Alignment brings the best of live entertainment and quality recording together into a great third album.

The launch of the CD comes shortly after the launch of a continental album for the campaign against hunger project by Action Aid International-Africa, ‘Hunger Free, Music for Freedom and Justice 2009’.  The album features artists from 15 other African countries, and includes two Dudu Manhenga originals, Is This the Life and Women of Africa.

Dudu has been busy in the region since the recording of Towards Alignment, featuring at Johannesburg’s Arts Alive festival in September, and with Mozambican artist Mingas at Maputo’s Franco Mozambicana in October, before returning to Zimbabwe to perform with Color Blu alongside Italian visitors Ital-Jazz and Oliver Mtukudzi.

Background

'OUT OF THE BLU' - 2003

After only a few years of studying and paying dues in the music industry, Dudu and Color Blu recorded their debut nine-track afro jazz fusion album 'OUT OF THE BLU' in 2003, which was warmly received by the music-loving public and contained songs which became hits like Mvura, Bengimthandile, Madlamini and a beautiful rendition of a medley of The Click Song, Iyaguduza and Shosholoza - songs that Dudu says ‘grew her up’ in the dusty streets of Pumula North in Bulawayo.

‘JULA’ – 2007

In 2007, Dudu released 'JULA' (- a Ndebele word meaning 'depth'), which aptly describes the musical journey on which she has reached deep into herself to find a music an identity that is unique and distinctive. In her own words, "The album is a synthesis of my experience so far in the music industry where I have sought my own space and realized my individuality – where I have come from, where I am going to and who I am."  It features tracks such as Kudala (Long Ago), Zvapressa, and Izithukuthuku, an artist’s plea against piracy which also features prominent Zimbabwean artists Chiwoniso Maraire and Victor Kunonga.

Dudu & Color Blu

In her twelve years in the music industry, Dudu has performed widely at local clubs, corporate gatherings and festivals in Zimbabwe (HIFA, Winter Jazz Festival, Regional Jazz Festival, African Banking Cooperation Summer Jazz Festival ) and Grahamstown Arts Festival, Women In Arts Festival (South Africa), Nguva Yedu Thuba Lethu Youth Festival, Harare Jazz Festival, often sharing the stage with big names such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Dorothy Masuka, The Cool Crooners, Judith Sephuma, Ray Phiri, Jimmy Dludlu and the late Jabu Khanyile, Kunle Ayo, Ernie Smith, Ringo, Eric Paliani, Prudence Katomene, Kudzi Sevenzo ,Chameleon, Gang of Instrumentals, Kwani Experience, Mingas, among many, many others.

To add on to this colourful profile her backing group Color Blu has helped produce and record major musical projects in the country where Dudu has emerged as a creative director and producer. The productions include the Famba Zvakanaka (IOM Safe Journey campaign), Action Aid’s campaign against hunger, and Power in the Voice.

Dudu is also active in Pamberi Trust’s FLAME programme for the development of women artists, and Color Blu work with Pamberi’s Jazz Appreciation project to promote African jazz.

by RINA MUSHONGA + THE ZIMFELLAS

The Mannenberg Jazz Club
Thursday 6 November 2009,  6-8pm

On Friday 6 November RINA MUSHONGA and the ZIMFELLAS celebrate the launch of their debut album ‘HAMBAYI=LET’S GO’ at The Mannenberg Jazz Club from 6-8pm.

It’s a new sound for Zimbabwe, fresh and vibrant, cleverly fusing diverse musical cultures and styles into a complete and very enjoyable whole, round, sound.  Rina’s strong guitar rhythms and folk/rock melodies reflect are complemented by strongly traditional but modern Afro pop vibes from The Zimfellas and their acoustic-percussion ensemble – all overlaid with powerful young African voices.

Dutch-Zimbabwean singer songwriter Rina Mushonga returned to Zimbabwe late 2008 for two reasons: to explore and connect with her musical heritage, and to further immerse herself in the Zimbabwean cultural scene.  What she found was a group of talented young musicians in Mutare, carving their own niche in the local scene and equally searching for new musical horizons.

Fusing together their different musical experiences, Rina’s residing mainly in folk pop and the Zimfella’s cool brand of traditional Zimbabwean music, they have managed to find common ground and create an altogether vibrant new sound.  Their quest to collectively write catchy, sensitive and relevant music reflecting the worlds they come from and indeed the future they hope for has been greatly successful and has produced music that delights in the beauty and strength of Zimbabwe as well as seeking to put traditional music in a new jacket.

Rina Mushonga sticks very much to her folk-pop sensibilities, continuing the trend of her soulful love songs of heart ache and loss, whilst simultaneously injecting her music with a new spirit.  The resounding harmonies of Zimfella vocals, pounding beat of the Jembe and Ngoma and the rhythmic, melodic swell of the Mbira, sincere lyricism and heady chord progressions all fuse together for a fresh musical experience that transcends borders and rushes right into the heart of its intended audience.

The songs on the debut CD are similarly diverse, from “Warrior”, a song by Rina Mushonga, celebrating independent, strong Zimbabwean women, and social humour in “Hakuna maGetz” (No Electricity) to their song “ Move Your World” calling out to young Zimbabweans to build their own future, which has already had great positive response from local audiences.

The Mutare-based group blazed onto the Zimbabwe musical scene at HIFA 2009 and has been seen in and around Harare and Mutare over the last 6 months, fitting into the music scene in the capital, and gaining recognition from artists and audiences alike.  They perform frequently at The Book Café and Mannenberg, and featured in a double bill with protest poet Cde Fatso and Chabvondoka at The Mannenberg in August 2009.  In October the group entertained crowds at the October Beer Fest hosted by the Zimbabwe German Society / Goethe Zentrum.  In their short time in the capital they have attracted the attention of people of all walks of life.

They like it.  It’s fresh, it’s energizing, it’s going down well!

Music legend, Oliver Mtukudzi, will tomorrow (Friday 30th October 2009) be conferred with an honorary degree from the Women’s University in Africa. Tuku will receive a Masters of Arts degree in acknowledgement of his contribution to the arts and culture sector, locally and internationally.

In an exclusive discussion with the Zimbo Jam at his Pakare Paye Centre in Norton yesterday afternoon, Tuku revealed that he will be honoured along with other notable Zimbabweans.

Our investigations reveal that another high profile personality to be honoured with a degree at the ceremony on Friday is beauty pageant queen, Kiki Divaris.

Oliver Mtukudzi has been in the music business for over thirty years. His music, spanning over fifty albums, has touched people on all continents and from different generations. His activities in the community, from his international work on HIV and AIDS awareness to his support for the development of young artists are second only to his music in their reach.

Tuku was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Zimbabwe in December 2003. Many of his fans have in the past asked why the superstar has not been given more recognition by academia for his massive contributions to the world music scene. Now, they can pause and say “Finally it’s happening.”

On the evening of his graduation Tuku will hold a concert at his favourite Harare venue, Any Millar Hall. The next night will see him performing at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza. He will be backed at both shows by Alexio Kawara and Sulumani Chimbetu.

The two shows are being organised by Tuku Music Promotions in a move from the norm of having an outside promoter run them.

Born in 1952 in Highfield, Harare, Tuku started performing in 1977 as a member of the Wagon Wheels, a band which featured another Zimbabwean music legend, Thomas Mapfumo. The group is well known for its hit single, Dzandimomotera, and the rest is an awesome history that is being written one beautiful note at a time as we watch.
