Zimbabwean jazz prodigy MAX VIDIMA returns home this week for an exciting jazz collaboration at the Book Café on Saturday 17 December, with gifted young jazzists of Harare: Sifiso Tich Makalisa (keyb), Josh Meck (bass), Simba Dembedza (drums). Born in Bulawayo, Vidima’s birth bridged two worlds: that of his Zulu mother from KwaZulu Nata, South Africal and his Shona father from Gweru, Zimbabwe. He spent his early years between the two countries, absorbing both the maskandi and mbaqanga music of his mother’s heritage, and the mbira tradition of Zimbabwe. During his early years he was widely exposed to the music of local artists including Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Louis Mhlanga, David Manda, George Phiri and others. “…these were my big influences” he said. Vidima bought a guitar, joined the local youth band and began the process of teaching himself. He eventually moved to South Africa to study music seriously, completed a Masters degree in Musicology from the University of Capetown, wrote a book about African guitar styles, released two albums, and runs an impressive international touring schedule, which has included performances in South America, USA, Germany, France and India. Now based in Johannesburg, Max continues to be a high profile performer in South Africa and returns home this December for an exciting collaboration with outstanding local jazzists Sifiso Tich Makalisa on keyboards (- another gifted music graduate of UCT), the talented young bassist Josh Meck, and Simba Dembedza (drums). ‘Tich’ Makalisa is well known and highly respected on the jazz and R&B scene both locally and regionally, having performed with many Zimbabwean artists over the years, and studied and performed at UCT alongside now prominent musicians such as Mozambican saxophonist Moreira Chonguica and others in the region and internationally. Josh Meck is a versatile bassist, much in demand, who has recently been travelling to many places in the world on tour with Comrade Fatso & Chabvondoka, and other ensembles. Drummer Simba Dembedza will be keeping the rhythm section locked down. A SHOW NOT TO BE MISSED! |
