Literary events continue at The Book Café on TUESDAY 26 MAY from 5.30-7pm, with a discussion on the topic “Do Prizes Play A Role In Developing Literature And The Arts?” Prizes raise all sorts of different questions. Everyone is pleased to receive a prize, and everyone assumes it’s a recognition of merit. But what happens if there is no competition? Or not enough competition? If the competition is very local is there a danger of insularity, or of lower standards? Just how does a prize benefit the author, publisher, bookseller or gallery? How objective are the judges? Some of these and other questions will be addressed by the panel, which includes Elvas Mari of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, who present the annual National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA); Farai Mpfunya, executive director of the Zimbabwe Culture Fund; Murray McCartney representing publisher Weaver Press, and award-winning Zimbabwean writer Shimmer Chinodya. The discussion will be chaired by Ray Mawerere. Literary discussions at The Book Café have been ongoing for many years, bringing literary people together from across the city. Over the years the discussion programme has been well supported by literary people in Harare, and in 2009 Pamberi Trust is guided on topics and speakers by a small advisory team including editor and publisher Irene Staunton, acclaimed poet Chirikure Chirikure, and writer Stanley Mupfudza. These and other Literary events fall under Pamberi Trust’s Communications project, and includes Literary, Artists’ Voices and other discussions, supported by the W.K.Kellogg Foundation. There is no entry charge, and all are welcome. ________ Tuesday 26 March 2009
