Gender Forum Discussion:

What worth is a violent marriage that has “normalised” it across generations?

The Book Café, Fife Ave Mall (upstairs)

Thursday 24 June, 2010 – 5.30-7pm

Chair:    Sally Dura

Speakers:       Netty Musanhu(Musasa Project), Leo Wamwanduka(PADARE TBC), Dorcas Makaza(WLSA)

In November 2009 Pamberi Trust, an arts development organisation based at The Book Café in Harare created a platform for discussion of gender and women’s issues.  Aimed at contributing to initiatives of advancing gender equality and promoting women’s rights in Zimbabwe the Gender Forum has been running for several months now and has become a popular space for tackling issues of concern guided by audience responses.

The Book Cafe Gender Forum is a monthly discussion, targeting human rights activists, members of civic society, women artists and members of the general public.

There has been an increase in the number of women killing themselves or being killed by their husbands or boyfriends largely because of domestic disputes.  At the “Advocacy Gathering on increased cases of femicide in Zimbabwe,” Musasa Project reported that 20 cases have been reported in the press alone since January this year an alarming statistic and serious cause for concern.

Do women have other choices in life...is marriage the ultimate goal...will Zimbabwean women ever be empowered enough to be less dependent of men?  What should women do to redefine this preset expectation and

break free from the die-hard mentality reflected by our social commentators – the musicians:

Murume wangu handibve pano...Josphat Somanje

Handiende, handiende...ndogarira vana vangu ndofira vana vangu, Steve Makoni

I couldn’t leave you even if I wanted too, you know I told you so before...Chiwoniso Maraire

Chibva wandipedzisa, chibva wandiuraya, chauchamirira chiiko...Willom Tight

Ponda zvako ndifire pavana vangu...Oliver Mtukudzi

Is any life worth losing over infidelity of a partner or anything for that matter? The last discussion in April touched on the relevance of men in gender struggles, the general consensus was that the world cannot continue finger pointing on gender issues and that there is need for continued engagement of both parties to come up with applaud-able results.  On Thur, 24 June, 2010, 5.30-7pm, The Book Cafe Gender Forum once again aims to engage men and women to come to the table under the topic ‘What worth is a violent marriage that has “normalised” it across generations.’

The discussion is FREE and all are welcome.

‘BOCAPA XPOSURE’ SEASON 1/2010 FINAL: “THE GREEN CONCERT”
Monday 21 June 2010 - 7pm to 9pm
The Book Café, Harare

On Monday 21 June, 7-9.30pm, Pamberi Trust and the Book Café hosts the final event of the competititve youth arts programme, Bocapa (Book Café Academy of Performing Arts) Xposure at the close of Season One 2010.  The season began mid-February with over 120 groups auditioned and from the semi-finals on 14 June five groups now go forward to Monday night’s show.

The top five groups promise to give fire-works, and include (in no particular order) ‘Afro- Mix’, Eve Kawadza, ‘Sunset’, ‘As We Is’ and the gospel group ‘TSOTE’ (‘Totally Sold Out To Emmanuel’).  Several good acts that followed the top 5, were ‘Donald’, ‘Lien’, ‘Mahombekombe’, ‘Evolution’ and ‘The Raphaelites’.

Professional established artists Willis Watafi, Adam Chisvo, Dudu Manhenga, Filbert Marowa and many others helped with the selection process, and winners went through workshop training for four weeks, which included voice training, orchestration, business management and HIV/AIDS.

“Our vision is to give upcoming artists the freedom to create,” said Hector Rufaro Mugani, the Youth Development Projects Officer and producer of BOCAPA Xposure.

The Final has been themed “The Think Green Concert”.  There has been an alarming change in climate globally and Pamberi Trust has engaged to involve artists in the fight of environmental degradation. “The theme joins the world over in this new environmental awareness.   Mugani added “artists have a responsibility as the mirrors of society to spread awareness of the importance for people to act responsibly towards this cause.”

Victor Kunonga, one of Zimbabwe’s popular and top selling artists will be the guest artist at the Grand Finale, where he will present the 5 groups with copies of his recently launched third scorcher of an album “Handinete”.  Years ago Victor took part in Bocapa, and since his rise to prominence, has been a strong pillar in the artistic community through BOCAPA and Artists Discussions at The Book Café, taking time out to guide up-and-coming artists.

In the past BOCAPA Xposure has worked with many artists who have emerged strongly to the national stage, and are now operating professionally, such as ‘Gwarimba’, ‘Afritude’, Vimbai Zimuto and Hope Masike.  The Book Cafe has become a home for young talent over the past 12 years, providing platforms for upcoming artists to freely express themselves.  Highly acclaimed professional artists such as Chiwoniso Maraire and  Dudu Manhenga have also performed on the Bocapa platform at the start of their careers.

Participating artists in the Bocapa youth programme have enjoyed extensive exposure, and inclusion in other national arts events, including the annual Chimanimani Arts Festival, and other events around the country.

All are welcome to come and witness the stars of tomorrow on Monday 21 June, at The Book Café.

The Arts and Culture Directory – Call for entries

The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) in partnership with Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust and the Spanish Embassy is currently updating entries for the 2011 edition of the National Arts and Culture directory which will be published by the end of the year.

The council is making a call to all interested parties in the arts and culture industry to submit entries for the latest edition of the Arts and Culture Directory. The first directory of this kind was compiled and published by NACZ in 2006, and an updated version is now due.

The council has been working with the 2006 edition of the Arts Directory but some of the information is now outdated and needs to be revisited.

The arts and culture sector has for the past few years grown tremendously with many new entrants, both artistes and service providers in the industry. Having witnessed this NACZ realized that there was an urgent need for the compilation of a comprehensive directory of the arts and culture industry
We feel the Arts and Culture Directory will go a long way in providing adequate information on the status of the Arts and Culture Industry in Zimbabwe. This directory will give stakeholders the information that they so require. The directory will also enable different stakeholders in the arts and culture industry to enhance their planning, marketing strategies and to build networks amongst themselves.

The arts and culture directory will be published in both soft and hard copies. Lack of adequate information on the arts in Zimbabwe has resulted in poor marketing of our country and cultural heritage. As a result availability of the directory on the internet will open doors for the marketing of our artistes and cultural products internationally. There is need to take advantage of the communications technologies like the world wide web and embark on a vigorous marketing and promotion of the arts and culture industry.

The directory will include among other things contact details of arts and culture practitioners, promoters, venues, supporters and organisations among others. Unlike the current directory the updated version will also take into account all cultural departments of embassies that are active within the local arts and culture sector.

The Arts and culture directory will be accessed electronically and will be at our missions abroad and at home, embassies, arts promoters, arts associations, libraries, and other institutions in the arts and culture industry.

NACZ calls upon all promoters, artists, venues, embassies, festivals, culture fairs, culture centres, institutions, companies, associations, service providers and any one involved in the Arts and culture industry to submit their contact details to the Head Office of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe or through the Provincial Offices nationwide. Deadline for submission of contact details is the 7th of July 2010.
Contact details should include: Name, Organisation, Physical and Postal address, telephone, fax, e-mail, website, other contact forms (e.g. skype, facebook, etc.), preferred sector (e.g. dance, theatre, visual arts etc.).
